Tales on Moon Lane recommends:

Newes from the DeadNewes from the Dead by Mary Hoffman.
Mary Hooper’s latest novel is based on the astonishing true story of Anne Green who having slept with the lord of the manor and miscarrying the resultant pregnancy, is accused of infanticide and sentenced to be hung, but in an odd turn of events she survived her hanging. The novel opens in darkness as Anne awakens unaware of where she is, her last memory – being hung. Her dramatic story is told in alternate chapters as she recalls the events of her life that have led up to this moment, whilst one of the doctors witnessing her autopsy narrates what is happening in the here and now. Another fantastic historical novel from Hooper – I couldn’t put it down!

This facsimile edition of a 1978 book is beautifully produced and was originally written, illustrated and hand lettered by award winning author Margaret Atwood. It is the story of two children living an idealistic life in a tree until their ladder disappears and they begin to wonder whether life on the ground would be better. A lyrical and charming picture book all about the wonders of imagination.

Earth Matters: An Encyclopedia of EcologyEarth Matters: An Encyclopedia of Ecology By David de Rothschild (.ed)
With the environment added to the National Curriculum this year, this is a timely publication from DK. It is centred on our planet and how we can look after it, beginning with a history of our world from an ecological perspective it then focuses on the different habitats on our planet and how each of these has been shaped through time and what we can now do to help protect and sustain them.

The Red NecklaceThe Red Necklace By Sally Gardner
As the French Aristocracy dance, dine and drink, revolution brews for the citizens of France. Against this turbulent backdrop we are introduced to a cast of intriguing and memorable characters linked together by the sinister Count Kallikovski. In The Red Necklace Sally Gardner takes the reader on a tumultuous adventure with her hero Yann, from Paris to London and back again as he struggles to outmanoeuvre the Count's machinations. Gardner's wonderful second novel for older readers is exciting and enthralling but above all it is a captivating love story.

ExtrasExtras By Scott Westerfeld
In a world where being talked about is all that matters, how does someone get plucked from obscurity and become one of the elite of New Pretty Town? In Scott Westerfeld's new novel, a follow up to the brilliant Uglies, Pretties and Specials, the world's previous obsession with beauty is over. Now Fame is everything and budding blogger Aya Fuse is determined to find a story that will ensure her fame. However when she uncovers a sinister plot to destroy the world even she couldn't have imagined how famous she would become. In Extras, Westerfeld has again used the concerns of today's society where fame is instant and fleeting - a world of reality TV shows, 24 hour news coverage and the Internet - as a familiar background to his futuristic landscape. Fast paced, exciting and thought-provoking, Extras is a must read for all teenagers.

Coming out in August 2008:

SpellsSpells By Emily Gravett
Bringing the lonely hearts add to a picture book format, one of my favourite illustrators is back with her seventh picture book this August. A small green frog finds a spell book and decides to us it to turn himself into a handsome prince with a few mistakes along the way until with a “Bim Bam Barebum…Out Spells Prince” and frog finally gets to kiss his princess – or does he? As always Gravett’s book is beautifully designed; and its split page format will ensure hours of fun for children with the different spell combinations. Spells is as magical as it’s title and will delight kids of all ages.

Mungo and the Dinosaur IslandMungo and the Dinosaur Island By Timothy Knapman and Adam Stower
Mungo’s latest adventure sees him exploring “The Amazing Secret of the Lost Island” as Scarface Sam Snaffler and his crew of hunters find the Lost Island and stumble across a group of Dinosaurs – planning on taking them captive, the bumbling Hunters are thwarted by Mungo stumbling right into the middle of the adventure. The Mungo books are perfectly pitched storytelling and great fun to read aloud – this one is no exception and I am expecting it to be another bestseller for us.

World of Mirrors and World of Shadows By Herve Tullet
Tullet’s art themed board books are quirky, imaginative and engaging. As good for using with babies as they are in the classroom their interactive elements encourage children’s creativity and imagination. In World of Mirrors each page is a mirror so readers can distort and transform images and add their own reflections and in World of Shadows a torch can be shone through the die-cut pages to create shadows on the wall. I love these books and hope there are still more to come.
